Weather's going to cool down enough, and maybe even be wet.
After putting their heads together Monday to check the weather forecast and figure out when it might be best to get the full 2012 sugar beet harvest underway, American Crystal Sugar officials have settled on 12:01 a.m. Wednesday, Oct. 3 to get the full stockpiling effort underway at its factories.
Typically, the full campaign begins at midnight on Oct. 1, but the unseasonably warm temperatures didn’t cooperate with that tradition this time around.
The forecast calls for a continual cool-down in temperatures, with a Wednesday high in the lower 60s and lows dipping into the 30s. Thursday is expected to be even chillier, with a chance of snow.
Although everyone’s talking about the extreme drought, there’s a very good chance that the full beet harvest will be a wet one, at least on the first day. Rain is forecast in the region all day Wednesday.
