The surveying and geomatics class at the University of Minnesota, Crookston, taught by Paul Aakre, was out last week comparing the latest method of surveying withe the older method.
The students are learning to use various instruments to measure elevations, distances, and angle measurements. The photographs show a process often referred to as "differential leveling".
The old method using less desirable auto levels requiring at least two people verses the new method of using the much more expensive ($30,000+) GPS RTK equipment where one person can collect the information at a much faster pace.
Global Positioning System (GPS), a space-based satellite navigation system, and Real Time Kinematic (RTK), asatellite navigation using the measurements of GPS, are used to survey land.
