  •     A longtime Minnesota State Patrol trooper escaped serious injury Tuesday evening when his MSP SUV was rear-ended on U.S. Highway 2 near Fisher after he turned around in the median to pursue a motorist who was speeding.
At approximately 7:51 p.m., according to the State Patrol report, Dean Smith, 47, of Thief River Falls was westbound on Highway 2 in a 2009 Chevrolet Tahoe, just west of Polk County Highway 18, when he clocked a speeding motorist, turned into the median turn-around and entered the eastbound lanes. At that point, the SUV's right rear corner was struck by the left front corner of a 2012 Mazda 3 driven eastbound on #2 by Virgil Benoit, 69, of Red Lake Falls. The Mazda entered the ditch and rolled.
Both drivers were hurt, but not seriously. Smith was taken to Riverview Hospital in Crookston with a minor injury, and Benoit was taken to Altru Hospital in Grand Forks with a non life-threatening injury.
The Tahoe sustained moderate damage, while the Mazda was totaled.
