  •     Although recent history has shown that first day of school enrollment can fluctuate significantly – mostly in downward fashion – by the time the last day of school rolls around in the spring, it's always good news when student numbers are up on day one, and that was the case Thursday in the Crookston School District.

According to figures provided by the school district office, it appears that first day enrollment in the three public schools is up 75 students from last year. Washington School went from 188 students to 201, Highland Elementary School enrollment grew from 452 to 477, and Crookston High School enrollment went from 573 to 610. The smallest classes are fourth and tenth grade, each with 85 students. Next up are first and sixth grade, both with 93 students, and ninth grade, with 94. Fifth grade has 95 students. As for classes topping 100, the largest class in the public schools is found in twelfth grade, with 116. Other classes with more than 100 students are eighth grade with 110, kindergarten with 108, seventh grade with 106, second grade with 103, and third grade with 101.

As for the two parochial schools in the district, Cathedral School, with kindergarten through sixth grade, on the first day of school this week had 63 students, up one from last fall. Our Savior's Lutheran School, with kindergarten through seventh grade, had 58 students, up five from last fall.
