Bernice Iola Stine, 99, of Crookston, MN, died peacefully Friday afternoon, August 31, 2012, at the RiverView Healthcare Center in Crookston, while surrounded by her family. She was born on July 30, 1913 in Good Hope Township of Norman County, MN, one of ten children of the union of Alfred H. and Hilda R. (Sauer) Olson. Bernice grew up at Beltrami, MN, was a confirmed member of the Beltrami Lutheran Church, and graduated from Beltrami High School on May 28, 1931. Her special interests while in school were declamation and debate, and she placed in both at various contests. Bernice organized the Beltrami 4-H Club, later becoming a leader, and helped establish the Liberty 4-H Club at Fertile, MN.
On June 30, 1931 Bernice was united in marriage to Lester W. Stine at Grand Forks, ND. The couple farmed near Fertile until moving to Crookston in 1957. Bernice was employed at the Red Owl Store in Fertile, and for twelve years at various restaurants in both Fertile and Crookston. She managed Fashion City Clothing for a year, and then clerked at Rock's Jewelry for twenty-five years before retiring in 1986, at the age of 73. Sadly, Lester passed away on May 8, 1995.
Bernice was a devoted member of the Church of Christ in Crookston. She was also a member and officer of the Crookston TOPS club, VFW Auxiliary, and BPW. Additionally she held membership in the Humane Society. Bernice enjoyed movies, dancing, and visiting with friends and neighbors. She embroidered and crocheted, and including this year had exhibited her crafts at the Polk County Fair in Fertile for many years. She was very proud of her awards, especially her grand prize ribbons, and had them on display in her room at the RiverView Care Center. Gardening was also of special interest to Bernice. She nurtured her flower beds and house plants, and received many ribbons from the flower shows put on by the Crookston Garden Club, of which she was a member.
Bernice is lovingly survived by a son and daughter-in-law, Robert and Kitty Stine of Trail, MN; 4 daughters and three sons-in-law: Iris Moen and Julie and Marvin Halstad, of Fertile, MN, Bonnie and Dennis Tollerud of Crookston, MN, and Sandra and Dale Cormican of Mentor, MN; a daughter-in-law, Ardell Stine of Thief River Falls, MN; 22 grandchildren; 48 great-grandchildren; 22 great-great grandchildren; 3 great-great-great grandchildren; a sister, Edith Hanson of Crookston; and many nieces, nephews, and other relatives. In addition to her beloved husband of 63 years, Lester; she was preceded in death by her parents; 2 sons, Leslie Stine, and Gene Stine and his wife, Jean; 2 sons-in-law, Edsel Johnson and Oris Moen; 2 grandchildren, an infant grandson Stine and DeEtte Tinkler; 4 sisters: Francis Bergsgaard, Mildred Boelter, Shirley Boelter-Larson, and Verna Brault; and 4 brothers: Glenard, Harold, Alfred, and Roger Olson. The funeral service celebrating the life of Bernice Iola Stine will be held at 11:00 a.m., Wednesday, September 5, 2012, at the Church of Christ, 321 5th Avenue South in Crookston, with Pastor David Johnson, officiating. Visitation will be at the church for one hour prior to the funeral. A graveside service will be held at the Fairview Cemetery near Beltrami, MN that afternoon at 2:00 p.m. The Stenshoel-Houske Funeral Home is assisting with funeral arrangements.
