Girls' swimming: Roed, Anderson lead Pirates to 3rd at Laker Pentathlon

Freshman Haley Roed and senior Abbie Anderson finished fourth and fifth, respectively, in the overall standings of the Detroit Lakes Laker Pentathlon Monday. As a team, the Pirates placed third of seven teams.

"The girls all swam awesome for the first meet," Pirate Head Coach Marley Melbye said. "Kate MacGregor as a seventh grader placing 25th, Marietta Geist also had an awesome meet and Sierra Pry as well. It was a good meet all around for the girls, a good start to the season. I think it pumped the girls up to see we finished third with only ten swimmers. You can't ask for much better. I was ecstatic and the girls had so much energy. It was fun."

Of the five events, Roed's best finished came 50-yard freestyle where she placed third. Anderson's top finish came in the 100-yard individual medley where she finished fourth.

"Haley and Abbie were very consistent, neck and neck the whole time," Coach Melbye said. "Those two battle in practice day to day and it didn't change in the meet. They were pushing each other.

"Our computer crashed before the meet so we went in with no seed times," Coach Melbye continued. "So it was pretty much all Crookston girls in the first heats. Abbie and Haley were never close to each other in lane assignments so they couldn't see each other. Both have such different mind sets where Haley goes out there and goes about her business while Abbie is a little more competitive. If Abbie could've seen Haley it might've pushed her; it would've been interesting to see what they could've done.

"Both girls are having times they had in the middle of the season last year because they were swimming in the summer and that goes for all the girls," Melbye continued. "It's phenominal they put in the extra effort in the offseason."

Park Rapids competed with 38 swimmers and Thief River Falls had 32 compared to Crookston's 10.

The Pirates will travel to Fosston on Thursday for a triangular beginning at 5:30 p.m.
