  • Stanley Wayne Johnson, 73, of Crookston, MN, passed away peacefully at Altru Hospital in Grand Forks, ND on Saturday, August 25, 2012, surrounded by family and friends.
Stan was born at Cando, ND on July 13, 1937 to Helmer and Louise (Syvertson) Johnson.  He was baptized in the Lutheran faith and raised in Grand Forks, ND, where he was confirmed at the United Lutheran Church. After graduating from nearby Thompson (ND) High School in 1958, he completed study in automotive mechanics at the Area Vocational Technical Institute in Thief River Falls, MN in 1961.
Stan met Darlene Johnson in Crookston and they were married on August 19, 1961 at the Eagle Point Baptist Church at Stephen, MN. The couple lived and worked in Crookston for many years, while raising two daughters, Shawnda and Sharla. Very sadly, Shawnda passed away on October 28, 1990. Stan spent over 20 years working at Crookston's M&H Station, while Darlene was employed as an LPN at the Bethesda Hospital, Northwestern and Altru Clinics, and the Glenmore Recovery Center. Stan was known for his frequent, long walks around Crookston, stopping to greet and visit with his many friends.  The staff of the RiverView Memory Care Center will dearly miss Stan. He was appreciated very much for his many years of volunteer service, and the delicious goodies he often baked and brought to treat them.  Stan's main focus was service to others less fortunate than himself, and he lived his life with that in mind. His sense of humor, combined with his kindness, delighted everyone who shared in his life.
Stan was a devoted member of the Trinity Lutheran Church and a longtime member of the Crookston Kiwanis Club. He and Darlene belonged to the local Square Dance Club, and they loved to go dancing, especially on Sunday evenings at the Eagles Club in East Grand Forks.  Sadness once again visited Stan with Darlene's passing on January 20th of this year. In his loneliness Stan's love of music gave him solace to the end of his life. May God richly bless the memory of Stanley Wayne Johnson.
Stan is survived by his daughter, Sharla Johnson (Scott Sirek) of East Grand Forks, MN; 3 sisters, Georgine Roller of Tacoma, WA, Carol Meshefski of Mesa, AZ, and Linda (Ray) Agrimson of Cedar Rapids, IA; 2 sisters-in-law; Donna Anderson of Stephen, MN, and Lorraine Flaten of Fergus Falls, MN; a brother-in-law, Bruce (Jan) Johnson of Thief River Falls, MN; and several nieces, nephews, and other relatives.  In addition to his beloved wife of fifty years, Darlene, and daughter, Shawnda, Stan was pre-deceased by his parents Helmer and Louise Johnson of East Grand Forks.
A funeral service in celebration of the life of Stanley Wayne Johnson will be held at 11:00 am, Friday, August 31, 2012, at the Trinity Lutheran Church in Crookston, MN, with The Rev. Jo Gast, officiating. Visitation will be on Thursday from 5-7:00 pm at the Stenshoel-Houske Funeral Home, with a 7:00 pm prayer service and time of sharing. Visitation will also be at the church for one hour prior to the funeral. Interment will be in the Oakdale Cemetery, Crookston. Online registry:  www.stenshoel-houske.com
