  • Two goals in the second overtime by Fergus Falls' Sam Steen buried the Pirates' hopes for a season-opening win Saturday in Fergus Falls.

Freshman Gutherie Dingmann, senior Blake Brekken and freshman Doug Larson each scored for the Pirates in regulation but the teams needed extra time to decide a winner.

Following a scoreless five-minute overtime period, the teams played another five minutes with Steen scoring twice to lift the Otters.

Dingmann's goal at 35:30 tied the game at 1-1 on an assist from senior Sean Williams.

Brekken tied it again at 2-2 on an assist from Larson in the 71st minute.

Larson then tied the game once more with less than three minutes remaining in regulation on an assist from freshman Jacob Roesch.

Sam Rausch also scored two goals for Fergus Falls.

Steen's first goal in overtime came 25 seconds in and his second came at the 88:30 mark.

Senior Alec Boike recorded eight saves in goal for the Pirates, including two in the overtime periods. Connor Hatfield had eight saves for the Otters.

The Pirates host Grand Forks Central today at 5:30 p.m.
