Girls' tennis: Pirates win Pirate Booster Carla Johnson Memorial

The third doubles team of juniors Lydia Shafer and Rachel Kanten finished first in the Pirate Booster Carla Johnson Memorial Tournament Saturday in Crookston. They would be the only champions for Crookston but the Pirates took first as a team thanks to placing third in each of the four singles matches and runner-up at first and second doubles.

The first doubles team of juniors Liz Awender and Amber Trostad fell in the championship match, as did the second doubles team of seniors Haley Maki and Shelby Lindtwed.

Junior Amber Trostad's only loss at third singles came in a three-set match with Thief River Falls' Sylvia Marolt.

At first and second singles, Crookston's Kylie Simmons and Lilli Denison were each dealt losses by the East Grand Forks sisters, Jessamy and Chessa Jones.

Jessamy Jones went on to take the first singles title, while Hibbing won the other three singles titles. Park Rapids took the first and second doubles championships.

The Pirates compete in the Park Rapids Quadrangular Tuesday, beginning at 9 a.m.
