She was married in Crookston.
Doris Vivian Nesland, 87, of New York Mills, MN, formerly of Thief River Falls, MN, passed away from pneumonia surrounded by her family on Saturday, July 21, 2012. She was born on June 15, 1925, in Gilbert, MN. Doris was baptized and confirmed at Trinity Lutheran Church, Thief River Falls, MN. Doris attended school in Mentor, MN, living about 2 miles south of Mentor, near Maple Lake.
On May 7, 1941, Doris was united in marriage to Eugene Nesland in Crookston, MN. They lived in Mentor and Grand Forks, ND, and in 1943, they moved to Thief River Falls, MN. Over the years they made their home in Mentor, Grand Forks, Thief River Falls, Tucson AZ, Ada, Brooklyn Park and New York Mills. She thoroughly enjoyed homemaking, worked at Sears order office and assisted her husband at Nesland Accounting Service.
She will be remembered for many things including her compassion and love for her family and friends, forever putting other people’s needs, interest or wishes before her own. She served as den mother to Cub Scouts and in various church roles. Her creativity and love of beauty was evident as she entertained grandchildren, in her craft making, in reading and in music. She enjoyed telling of her love for her husband of 71 years. “We are as much in love today as the day we were married.” She was encouraging and kind with deep faith in Jesus, often expressing her eagerness to be in heaven with her Savior.
Doris is survived by her husband, Eugene, New York Mills, MN; children: Carol (Francis) Rogers, Bemidji, MN; Jerry (Geraldine) Nesland, Ottertail, MN; Cindy (John) Schlenk, Brooklyn Park, MN; 9 grandchildren, 18 great-grandchildren and a host of other relatives and friends. She was preceded in death by her parents, Leonard & Hazel (Sykes) Boyum.
Visitation will be Friday, July 27 in Fertile, MN at the Erikson-Vik Funeral Home from 5 to 7 p.m. with a prayer service at 6 p.m.
Funeral service will be in Mentor, MN at 11:00 a.m. on Saturday, July 28, 2012, at Bethel Bible Church, visitation one hour prior to the service.
Interment at Rosehill cemetery, rural Mentor, MN.
