Sydney Boike, who recently wrapped up her freshman year at CHS, has been starting for the North Tartan West 14U AAU girls' basketball team since late March.
This past weekend, Boike and her North Tartan team finished 10th of 32 teams at the Nike Tournament of Champions Summer Showcase in Chicago.
The tournament is considered the most competitive event of its kind. In its 13th season this year, last year more than 550 NCAA Division I coaches attended the event.
In the first round, Boike and her team defeated a Denver, Colo. team by six. In the round of 16, they lost in overtime to a team from Philadelphia, Pa., who is one of the top ranked teams in the nation. After beating a team from Virginia, they beat a team from Rockford, Ill. by six. In the final game, North Tartan West lost to a team from Boston Mass. by six.
The team is made up of Minnesota girls from St. Michael/Albertville, Paynesville, Delano, Moose Lake, Melrose, Becker, Annandale, Princeton and Crookston.
Madison McKeever of Win-E-Mac, who plays on the North Tartan West 13U team has played up with the 14U team for a couple tournaments.
North Tartan is hosting a season finale tournament next Sunday, July 22 through Tuesday, July 24.
Members of the Pirate girls’ basketball team will compete in the Pacesetter MIT July 28-29 at the College of St. Benedict. On July 31, the Pirates will travel to Fergus Falls for scrimmages against Fergus Falls and West Fargo. Finally, the Pirates were invited to play in the Sweet 16 August 4-5 at St. Ben's. The projected top four teams in each class are invited.
