The Reds breathed a sigh of relief Wednesday evening with a 4-3 win over the Thief River Falls Thieves, snapping a seven-game losing streak.
The Thieves rallied in the eighth inning with three runs and had a man on third in the ninth but Reds closer Cole Ricard held on for the save.
Aaron Motl earned the win, pitching 7 1-3 innings and allowing three runs on six hits and two walks. Ricard came in in the eighth with bases loaded and one out and got the Reds out of the jam.
The Reds put up three in the fourth with Ben Parkin leading off with a walk and Motl getting a base hit. Ben Wilson then drove in Parkin on a fielder's choice but an error put Wilson on first. Kit Gilbert then drove in Motl with a base hit and Wilson later scored.
Gilbert doubled in the sixth with one out and later scored on an error to give Crookston its 4-0 lead.
Gilbert finished the game 2 for 3 with a double, two RBI, one run scored and was hit by a pitch. Nick Wheelhouse finished 2 for 4 at the plate, while Paul Smith was 2 for 5. Motl went 1 for 3 with three stolen bases and was hit by a pitch. Parkin hit 1 for 3 with a run scored and a stolen base.
Skip Toops also had a hit but his team-leading batting average of .433 in 11 games dropped a little. Toops has been hit by 11 pitches this season. Motl is batting .385 in six games and has a team-high five stolen bases.
The Reds host Cass Lake on Friday at 7 p.m. Cass Lake edged the Reds 4-3 on June 17 at the Wolf Lake Tournament.
