  • Age 89 of Detroit Lakes and a Crookston native, died June 13. Interment will be June 25 in Gentilly.

  • Jerome J. Mercil, 89, Detroit Lakes, MN, died Wednesday, June 13 at Emmanuel Nursing Home in Detroit Lakes.  Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 2:30 PM, Monday, June 18 at Holy Rosary Catholic Church, Msgr. Timothy McGee, officiating.  Interment will be 11:00 AM Monday, June 25 at St. Peter’s Catholic Cemetery in Gentilly, MN.
     
    Friends may call 1:30 – 2:30 PM Monday at Holy Rosary Catholic Church in Detroit Lakes.
     
    Jerome Jean Mercil was born July 7, 1922 in Crookston, MN to Arthur and Albertine (Sauve) Mercil.  He was raised and educated in the Crookston area.  He served with the U. S. Army and, following his discharge, he returned to the Crookston area.  He then attended the University of Minnesota in Minneapolis for two years.  Jerry was united in marriage to Jean Barry October 26, 1949 in Bemidji, MN.  They lived in a number of communities in Minnesota where Jerry made his living selling building materials.  They came to Detroit Lakes in 2003.
     
    Jerry enjoyed reading, cooking – especially French and Italian gourmet cooking, classical music, and he was an excellent singer having sung at each of his daughter’s weddings.  He also enjoyed the Minnesota Twins, story telling and telling jokes which highlighted his great sense of humor.  He was a member of the D.A.V, the American Legion and the Knights of Columbus.
     
    Survivors include his wife of 62 years, Jean of Detroit Lakes, daughters, Nancy (Lou) Guzek of Detroit Lakes, MN, Janet (David) Gilbertson of Palisade, MN, Diane (David) Kucera of Bemidji, MN,  Julie (Will) Owens of Grand Rapids, MN; 10 grandchildren: Christopher, Katie, Kristina. Matthew, A.J., Nora, Andy, Jeramy, Alex and Kelly; three great-grandchildren: Kade, Liam and Lucas; one sister: Lorraine McWaters of Crookston, MN, he was preceded in death by a sister and three brothers: Nora Brusseau, Al, Lowell and Ray.  David-Donehower Funeral Home is serving the family.  Memories may be shared online at www.daviddonehower.com.
